However, the sea otter’s thick, rich pelt also made it a major target for hunters who, by the 1900s, had brought the animal close to extinction. They help kelp forests to flourish by keeping sea urchin numbers under control. A member of the weasel family, the sea otter ( Enhydra lutris) keeps warm in the water because it possesses the densest fur in the animal kingdom – about 850,000 to a million hairs per square inch. As explorers opened up the far north two centuries ago, hunters pushed deeper into the Aleutians in pursuit of the pelts of the sea otters that thrived there in their hundreds of thousands. This isolation has not put the islands beyond the harmful influence of humans, however. “No place in the modern world is much wilder or more remote than the Aleutians,” he says. This top-down picture – with predators influencing the health of plants – is depicted in enthralling detail in his newly published Serendipity: An Ecologist’s Quest to Understand Nature (University of California Press).Įstes has spent most of his working life in the Aleutian Islands, which stretch across the North Pacific Ocean from Alaska to the coast of Kamchatka in eastern Russia. Top-down forcing – or trophic cascades – looks at the problem in the reverse direction, with a perfect example being provided by the work of James Estes, an American marine biologist who has studied wildlife in the north Pacific Ocean for the past 45 years and has revealed the astonishing manner in which terrestrial and sea predators can change land and marine environments. ![]() An example of this approach is provided by scientists who study how reductions in Arctic sea ice might reduce levels of algae (which forms on the underside of sea ice) and which might then affect the creatures that consume alga: the plankton, fish and seals further up the food chain. This view of nature – looking down from the top – contrasts with previous attempts to understand food chains from changes that affect their bottom rungs to see how animals and predators at higher levels are affected. More to the point, as human activities impact more and more on wildlife, we are changing trophic cascades with profound and unexpected consequences. Nevertheless, the concept of trophic cascades – as these ladders of interacting predator and prey populations are now known – is recognised today as being a powerful and important force in shaping the natural history of our planet. Huxley was almost certainly being facetious in outlining his maids‑to-empire chain. Around islands that lacked sea otters, urchins had increased in size and in numbers with devastating consequences Thus old maids would provide the perfect setting for ensuring plenty of clover and therefore healthy cattle and good roast beef to feed our troops and thus ensure the prosperity of the British Empire. Cattle graze on clover and cattle means beef. They kept cats, Huxley argued, and those pets would ensure neighbouring fields would be low in mice, high in bees and rich in clover.Īnd that in turn would have powerful consequences for the British Empire, Huxley added. It was an idea that took the fancy of Darwin’s chief disciple, the biologist Thomas Huxley who extended this cat-clover cascade in 1892 to include old maids. ![]() 4/17/2023 0 Comments Skatebird game![]() Instead we get a rather straight-faced attempt to be a feel-good Tony Hawk. After all, you’re a birdie on a skateboard. Yes, it has that sweet little story and feel-good vibe going for it, but I was expecting some subversive and surrealist humour. ![]() Yet despite being a game that doesn’t play well on any level, the real football to the groin in SkateBIRD is the lack of personality. On the other hand, these platfoming gimmicks infuriating to try and execute since, at speed on a skateboard, it can be difficult to properly time and execute any of them with any real precision, and platforming is a genre focused almost exclusively on precision. Moves like a double jump, which wouldn’t really work in a Tony Hawk game, are here, and they do differentiate the experience somewhat. The developers seem to have been aware of this, as they’ve added platforming elements in there to spice the action and missions up a little. There’s only a couple of little stunts that you can pull off with the skateboard, and while it’s a rush and a half to nail them the first time, by the time you’re repeating the stunt for the 1,000th time, the appeal has worn thin. ![]() Ultimately, the limited move set and range of tricks work to SkateBIRD’s detriment too. This is a big hurdle for the game to trip over. The sports game genre (and SkateBIRD is, ultimately, a sports game) is one that lives and dies on players feeling like the game is treating them consistently. The game goes from being incredibly generous about whether it’s going to let you get away with a trick, to incredibly strict on something you thought you’d nail (and it’s not always clear what mood the game is in), and all these little inconsistencies quickly drag the experience down. The camera really struggles to keep up, and turning curves don’t quite feel right. It’s the moments where you’re doing things that don’t fall into a very narrow band of what the developers anticipated where things fall apart. Those moments where SkateBIRD is running the way the developer clearly expected players to play, it’s fine. In isolation I probably would have been inclined to give the camera and controls a pass, too. My Switch is still alive, so while there were perhaps more bugs with clipping and physics going haywire, I’m willing to give that, in isolation, a pass. ![]() This is an indie game, and if you play enough titles at the indie end of the spectrum you learn to tolerate bugs so long as they don’t blow up your console. I could talk about the bugs and glitches, but to be honest I did anticipate them going in. But unfortunately despite having one of the best video game concepts of all, SkateBIRD falls over at every turn. From the day I first heard about this game I’ve been following it closely. I’ve come to marvel at how intelligent and character-filled birds can be, and since this game lets me play as a sulphur-crested cockatoo, I really should have loved this game. I’m a guy that feeds a flock of sulphur-crested cockatoos that hang around my home (they like sunflower seeds), a horde of pigeons that hang around for the bits the cockatoos don’t eat, and because of that we also get magpies and crows that also like to hang around. ![]() I should have absolutely loved this game. The game also promises to be a more accessible skateboarding experience than, say, Tony Hawk (which is excellent for a person like me), and it has the perfect chill blend of lo-fi beats, energetic SKATE music, and birdies chirping. Because birds are little animals, the “skate park” that you cruise around is actually just a house falling into a mess (because the human’s lacking enthusiasm in life), and so the game has a brilliant, bittersweet Micro Machines and Katamari Damacy vibe. SkateBIRD had everything going for it a brilliant concept (“look at the lil birdies pulling Tony HAWK tricks, hehe!”) and some heartfelt messaging (as limited as it is, the game weaves a heartfelt message about never giving up and doing your best, and the lil birdies miss their “big friend” human, who has a stupid new job). Do you remember that episode of The Simpsons where Homer ends up in the dictionary, and “to pull a Homer” means “to succeed despite idiocy?” Well, I reckon SkateBIRD should get a dictionary entry too: “to completely and utterly fail despite having an infallible concept.” ![]() 4/17/2023 0 Comments Cubism meaning![]() The term “installation”, which appeared in the 1970’s, generally applies to works created for interior spaces (ie. 4/17/2023 0 Comments Displaylink usb graphics r7 370![]() ![]() Nvidia’s and AMD’s proprietary drivers are still entirely incompatible with DisplayLink graphics on Linux. Toggling the screen on and off inside of your Display management UI usually solves this. When rebooting your Linux computer, or simply logging out and back in, your USB-attached displays will not always come back without having to disconnect and reconnect them.Ĭhanging the location of your DisplayLink screens in your virtual desktop can sometimes cause strange issues (like only half of the monitor rendering). Unfortunately, due to the discontinuation of Gnome 3’s fallback mode, that is no longer an option for improved performance.īesides the issues I mentioned above, there’s still a few other problems. Switching to a lighter-weight window manager or desktop environment (XFCE, LMDE, Mate, etc) results in a quite usable setup, provided your main display adapter is a recent Intel chip. But when all those pixels have to get processed by the CPU and sent over USB, it’s a huge hit. When you’re just going through a GPU, you’ll only notice battery loss. ![]() Compositing re-renders far more pixels than non-compositing desktops. Using a composited window manger(Gnome 3, Unity, Cinnamon, etc) will result in poor performance across all of your displays. Performance continues to be an issue with DisplayLink on Linux. ![]() You can also keep track of the USB Graphics situation under Ubuntu in this blueprint. It should be noted that the reason this is necessary is due to the Ubuntu team making some changes to the kernel that they ship with Ubuntu, resulting in broken DisplayLink graphics support. Simply enable them from System Settings like you would enable any extra monitor attached to your PC.Ī step-by-step guide to accomplish this will not be provided because switching away from your distro-provided kernel is something only expert users should attempt. Once this is done, DisplayLink graphics adapters will work in multi-monitor mode. In order to enable DisplayLink adapters to work on Ubuntu, one must download the latest Mainline Kernel build from the Ubuntu Kernel PPA, install it, and then reboot with that kernel. Ubuntu still has several issues with DisplayLink graphics, and they do not work out of the box. You should be able to connect one of our docking stations and create a plug-and-play multi-seat setup, or connect one of our display adapters, and expand your desktop to an extra monitor using the Arandr utility, or something similar. We noticed some regressions on Fedora 19, but these have largely been resolved in Fedora 20. The AMD proprietary drivers are unavailable in any easy to install package under Fedora 20, but we installed them in Ubuntu, and were unable to get any results, they simply do not work with DisplayLink graphics.įedora has always provided the best support for DisplayLink graphics on Linux. The AMD open-source drivers work under both multi-seat and multi-monitor setups, but the performance, at least in our tests, is significantly worse than with the Intel drivers. The Nvidia proprietary drivers do not work under any scenario. Attempting multi-monitor setup with a DisplayLink adapter and an Nvidia graphics card results in garbage graphics being displayed on your DisplayLink-attached monitor. Nvidia graphics cards, when running the open source nouveau driver, only work in Multi-Seat mode. Intel is the most compatible, providing decent results under all configurations. For Nvidia and AMD, we tested both the open-source and proprietary drivers. Our test systems included Intel, Nvidia, and AMD primary graphics adapters. We used all Plugable products in the tests for this post. That said, it is possible to get things working in limited scenarios for USB 2.0 generation DisplayLink-based adapters. Unfortunately, it’s just not plug and play yet today, as it is on Windows. We’d recommend staying away unless you’re an advanced Linux user who is willing to play with different distros, install optional components and do hand configuration. You can find many distros and configurations where it just won’t work. Multi-monitor on Linux, especially with multiple graphics cards and USB graphics adapters, remains problematic. What follows is an update on the situation, looking at both Fedora 20 and Ubuntu 13.10, and examining how far we have come, and how far we still have to go.
