Yup, recording off the Internet onto our hard drives is just like recording off the free public radio airwaves onto our cassette recorders years ago. if it was at least 128kbps stereo it might have been worth the hassel but for mono it's a waste of effort. looks like I am better off downloading music from youtube than free spotify. Others have reported that they too experienced the unknown error status when trying to convert but they do not specify any system specs they are running so cannot deduce anything further. and if this program is expecting stereo premium but only getting free mono music that might be the cause. Or it could be that so far all the tracks that have been played on my free account sound mono not stereo. Whether this is because I am running Vista version of spotify and not the current build which is windows 7 and above I can't tell.
